Establishment of consortium for enhancing author identification in Germany

The establishment of the consortium for research institutions was initiated within the ORCID DE project and can now be realised, after TIB agreed to undertake the administrative management of the Germany ORCID Consortium

The ORCID DE project of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG) signs a Memorandum of Understanding with the Technische Informationsbibliothek – German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) on the establishment and operation of an ORCID consortium for research institutions in Germany.

One of the great challenges in academic publication management is ensuring that authors are attributed clearly to the work they have created. The DFG-funded ORCID DE project takes up this challenge and aims to promote the Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) – a unique identifier for researchers – at universities and non-university research institutions throughout Germany.

A “Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment and operation of an ORCID consortium for research institutions in Germany” has now been signed by the partner organisations (the German National Library, the Helmholtz Open Science Coordination Office at the German Research Centre for Geosciences GFZ, and Bielefeld University Library) of the project funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG) called ORCID DE and by the Technische Informationsbibliothek – German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) in Hannover. The Memorandum of Understanding represents an important step on the path towards promoting ORCID at universities and non-university research institutions in Germany.

TIB will take on the administrative management of the Germany ORCID Consortium and will administer ORCID membership for research institutions in Germany. "We are delighted to be able to join forces with ORCID DE to promote the dissemination of ORCID in Germany. This collaboration complements our activities in the area of research data very well. For example, TIB has been allocating DOI names for research data from the fields of science and technology since 2004, ensuring the permanent availability and referencing capability of research data," stated Uwe Rosemann, Director of TIB. Roland Bertelmann from the Helmholtz Open Science Coordination Office, who signed the Letter of Memorandum for the project partners acting in the capacity of the main applicant, emphasised the potential of academic author identification: "With the ORCID standard, researchers can be linked clearly and reliably to their research achievements, such as publications, research data and software."

The establishment of the consortium for research institutions was initiated within the ORCID DE project and can now be realised, after TIB agreed to undertake the administrative management of the Germany ORCID Consortium. Any research institutions interested in becoming a member of ORCID are invited to join the Germany ORCID Consortium. A contact form is available here for interested institutions.

About the ORCID DE project partners:

The German National Library

For over 100 years, the German National Library has been collecting all German and German-language spoken and written publications from 1913, documenting and archiving them, and making them accessible to the general public. The Library offers its extensive services at its two sites in Leipzig and Frankfurt am Main, and in digital form throughout the world. In addition, the German National Library possesses valuable and varied special collections, such as the German Exile Archive 1933–1945 and the German Museum of Books and Writing. The German National Library cooperates with organisations at the national and international level. For example, it is the leading partner in developing and maintaining rules and standards in Germany and plays a significant role in the development of international standards. The German National Library is involved in numerous projects on the development and use of technical and communication infrastructures for the information society.

Bielefeld University Library

Bielefeld University Library has been operating the world’s leading search engine for Open Access publications for over 10 years, called the Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE). Some of the relevant externally funded projects it has been involved in include EU projects DRIVER, PEER, OpenAIRE and Europeana Cloud and the DFG-funded project "Automatic enrichment of OAI metadata". Bielefeld University Library will contribute its technical expertise from the areas of the aggregation and enrichment of (OAI) metadata and its expertise on workflows for search engine-based indexing to the project.

Information about the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB)

The German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) in Hannover is the Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology and University Library. Acting in the capacity of the German National Library for technology as well as architecture, chemistry, information technology, mathematics and physics, TIB supplies both national and international researchers and industry with literature and information from its special fields. Acting in the capacity of a University Library, TIB provides students, researchers and teaching staff from all faculties of Leibniz Universität Hannover with literature and information in both printed and electronic form. TIB has outstanding collections of fundamental and highly specialised literature on science and technology. Its remit is to preserve recorded knowledge and to provide the latest information for research and industry, both now and in the future, irrespective of the time and the place. The aim of TIB is to provide its customers with innovative, efficient and smooth access to data, information and knowledge, and to make large information spaces available to them in a structured, suitable manner. TIB conducts applied research and development to optimise the services it offers. As a founder member of the DataCite Association, TIB is involved in inter alia the allocation of Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) to facilitate online access to research data and to promote their acceptance as independent, citable research objects. The DataCite Office is managed by TIB in Hannover.
