The ORCID DE project of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG) signs a Memorandum of Understanding with the Technische Informationsbibliothek – German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) on the establishment and operation of an ORCID consortium for research institutions in Germany.
One of the great challenges in academic publication management is ensuring that authors are attributed clearly to the work they have created. The DFG-funded ORCID DE project takes up this challenge and aims to promote the Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) – a unique identifier for researchers – at universities and non-university research institutions throughout Germany.
A “Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment and operation of an ORCID consortium for research institutions in Germany” has now been signed by the partner organisations (the German National Library, the Helmholtz Open Science Coordination Office at the German Research Centre for Geosciences GFZ, and Bielefeld University Library) of the project funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG) called ORCID DE and by the Technische Informationsbibliothek – German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) in Hannover. The Memorandum of Understanding represents an important step on the path towards promoting ORCID at universities and non-university research institutions in Germany.
TIB will take on the administrative management of the Germany ORCID Consortium and will administer ORCID membership for research institutions in Germany. "We are delighted to be able to join forces with ORCID DE to promote the dissemination of ORCID in Germany. This collaboration complements our activities in the area of research data very well. For example, TIB has been allocating DOI names for research data from the fields of science and technology since 2004, ensuring the permanent availability and referencing capability of research data," stated Uwe Rosemann, Director of TIB. Roland Bertelmann from the Helmholtz Open Science Coordination Office, who signed the Letter of Memorandum for the project partners acting in the capacity of the main applicant, emphasised the potential of academic author identification: "With the ORCID standard, researchers can be linked clearly and reliably to their research achievements, such as publications, research data and software."
The establishment of the consortium for research institutions was initiated within the ORCID DE project and can now be realised, after TIB agreed to undertake the administrative management of the Germany ORCID Consortium. Helmholtz Open Science Coordination Office
The Helmholtz Open Science Coordination Office promotes the further development of Open Science in the Helmholtz Association. It provides support to researchers on all matters concerning Open Access, the accessibility and reuse of research data, and related topics concerning digital and networked science. Bielefeld University Library has been operating the world’s leading search engine for Open Access publications for over 10 years, called the Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE). Some of the relevant externally funded projects it has been involved in include EU projects DRIVER, PEER, OpenAIRE and Europeana Cloud and the DFG-funded project "Automatic enrichment of OAI metadata". Bielefeld University Library will contribute its technical expertise from the areas of the aggregation and enrichment of (OAI) metadata and its expertise on workflows for search engine-based indexing to the project.
